Did you know that eating a handful of nuts every day could reduce your chance of getting heart disease? According to research by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2003 there are several health benefits to eating some types of nuts.
Walnuts, almonds, peanuts, pistachios, pecans and hazelnuts were reported to have “good” fat called monounsaturated and polyunsaturated which have been shown to lower “bad” cholesterol called LDL. So, these types of nuts are good for your heart and help reduce the risk of heart disease. These fats also have an anti-inflammatory effect and can help repair tiny muscle injuries. Plus, nuts are an excellent source for vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
Other nuts were researched by the FDA, as well. Macadamias, cashews and Brazils were shown to have higher levels of saturated fat and were not recommended for preventing heart disease.
So, the next time you’re in the mood for a crunchy treat, do your heart a favor and pick up some almonds, peanuts or pecans.
Happy snacking!

Gout
Several people have walked into our office complaining of pain in their big toe. Sometimes it is nothing more than a fixation in the joint, it could also be osteoarthritis from sports or other activities, but it could be gout. Gout usually starts in the big toe but I have seen it in the knee, foot, and other areas of the leg. Gout happens when the body has trouble metabolizing uric acid. It is possible to have high uric acid levels and not have gout. Gout is made worse by eating foods high in purine. Organ meats, scallops, muscles, and some fish are high in purine. There are also vegetables such as dried beans and asparagus that are moderately high in purine. Heavy alcohol use, kidney disease, obesity, high blood pressure, and some drugs can interfere with uric acid elimination. Because of the kidney problems associated with gout, I often suggest reducing foods high in oxalic acid. For a list of these foods, click on the following link. http://oxalicacidinfo.com/

In managing gout, you should first get a medical exam with labs. Second, modify your diet and lifestyle. Third, although there is no cure for gout, there are supplements that make it much easier to live with. They include Phosfood liquid, AC Carbomide, Arginex, Renatrophin, Celery Seed, and Valerian root. There is also nutritional support for abnormal levels of uric acid when a patient does not have gout.

Protein Diet and Disese
Many of us are concerned about weight loss. Not nearly enough of us are concerned about health. We’re more concerned about the way we look. As I’ve said many times, weight loss is simply burning more calories than you consume. When we are out of shape, we are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease. CVD happens through a sequence of biochemical events. Fat cells in our bodies cause inflammation in our blood vessels which leads to high blood pressure. At the same time, a high level of fatty acids in the blood which occurs in obese people, inhibits a compound that helps relax blood vessel walls and lower blood pressure.
Fat cells secrete estrogen which leads to certain types of cancer, mainly breast cancer. Being overweight also increases the chance of type II diabetes. You are at risk for diabetes if you have a waist larger then 40” for men and 35” for women, a body mass index greater than 25, triglycerides over 150mg/dl, an HDL level less than 40 for men and less than 50 for women, or a blood pressure greater than 130/85.
Many people think they can lose a lot of weight by eating no carbs and being on a mostly meat diet. This could even be dangerous to your health. Here is a very good article on how much protein your body needs and just some good information.

Do You Have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
You may have heard of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, but do you know if it's something that effects you?
According to the National Institute of Neurlogical Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), these are common symptoms of Carpal Tunnel:
- Symptoms usually start gradually, with frequent burning, tingling, or itching numbness in the palm of the hand and the fingers, especially the thumb and the index and middle fingers.
- Some carpal tunnel sufferers say their fingers feel useless and swollen, even though little or no swelling is apparent.
- The symptoms often first appear in one or both hands during the night, since many people sleep with flexed wrists. A person with carpal tunnel syndrome may wake up feeling the need to "shake out" the hand or wrist. As symptoms worsen, people might feel tingling during the day.
- Decreased grip strength may make it difficult to form a fist, grasp small objects, or perform other manual tasks.
- In chronic and/or untreated cases, the muscles at the base of the thumb may waste away.
- Some people are unable to tell between hot and cold by touch.
To read the full article from NINDS, visit http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/carpal_tunnel/detail_carpal_tunnel.htm
Chiropractic care may be able to help reduce or eliminate these symptoms of carpal tunnel. To find out if you have carpal tunnel and to see if a chiropractor can help, please call our Dallas GA office at 678-777-3116 for a free consultation.

Are you in pain?
Many people come to our office and report taking prescription and over-the-counter pain killers. When patients ask about prescription pain killers, I suggest they speak with their medical doctor. I explain that the medical doctor should be an expert in prescribed medications, especially the ones they are prescribing. Many medical doctors will gladly discuss side effects, interactions with foods and other drugs. If your medical doctor isn’t willing to do that with you, I highly recommend finding a new doctor. Registered pharmacists can also give you this type of information.
As to self-prescribed store-bought pain killers, they are often taken incorrectly and cause potentially dangerous side-effects. The FDA is cracking down on the use of acetaminophen, which an ingredient in many prescription drugs and the main ingredient in Tylenol. Complications are especially likely using acetaminophen and alcohol at the same time. There have been thousands of cases of acetaminophen related liver failure in the United States.
The health care community has known about these problems for many years. I was aware of this problem long before I became a chiropractor. It’s unfortunate that so many people have been injured.
There is a better way! In our office we have many ways to minimize pain including chiropractic care; safe, natural nutritional supplements; physical therapy and rehabilitation. We can reduce or eliminate your pain without dangerous risks and side-effects.

New Year’s Resolutions: Weight Loss
This is the time of year when many of us are setting goals and making resolutions for this new year. One of the most popular resolutions is to lose weight.
If this is one of your resolutions, please consider these three important aspects when it comes to losing weight.
First: Fad diets do not work. Weight loss products, pill, potions and shakes sold on TV do not work.
There are several companies selling pills that claim to effect cortisol levels in the body and help you lose weight. When they first came out, I asked a friend who has a PHD in endocrine physiology what she thought of these pills. After she finished laughing, she stated they do now work at all.
Sadly, most products on the market these days make fraudulent and ambiguous claims. The disclaimers at the end of commercials and in package inserts limit their liability because they completely change the impression that they have worked so hard to create. If you use a shake, meal replacement or fad diet to lose weight, as soon as you stop using these methods, you will gain the weight back.
Second: Exercise is the most important component of weight loss. The first thing anyone should do to lose weight is exercise. Any plan that doesn’t include a gradual increase of exercise will not work. Increasing your exercise at an appropriate level and continuing the exercise program for the rest of your life will work.
Third: Decrease your calorie intake and eat more healthy food. Permanent change in the amount of food and type of food you eat is also essential.
It’s not easy. It’s not quick. And it requires a lot of discipline. Abrupt massive change all at once is not good. Start with one change each week. You could cut your junk food or soda in half the first week, walk for 15 minutes each day the second week, double your vegetables the third week, drink 4 glasses of water every day the fourth week, etc. Over the period of several months, you would see significant progress! With life long effort, you will lose weight, maintain a proper body mass index, have more energy to do the things you enjoy and ideally live healthier longer.
